Legal Status: Private sector managed health care programme offered by Medscheme

Mission Statement/Goal:
To provide a comprehensive and confidential Disease Management Programme for members of contracted medical funds and employees of contracted companies who are living with HIV/AIDS and members of NGOs and the public sector (utilising donor funding) .

Description of services provided:
Aid for AIDS is active in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Malawi.

Care - Indirectly involved, through patient's own health care providers.
Prevention - Education/Awareness programme and telephonic support of enrolled patients and families
Treatment - Managed access to antiretroviral therapy, associated medication, prophylaxis, immunisation and investigations.
Workplace - Workplace programmes in place for enrolled companies.
Other - Support and training for healthcare providers by way of extensive clinical guidelines, regular newsletters, telephonic availability and a expert clinical advisory committee. Actuarial prevalence assessments, KAP surveys, Voluntary Counselling & Testing (VCT) programmes. Analysis and reporting of outcome data.

Programme staff include a full-time Internist, doctor, and several nurses and pharmacists plus support staff and access to academic and private sector HIV experts.

Year started: 1998
Employees/volunteers: 36 staff members; more than half are professionals. No volunteers.
Working languages: English, Afrikaans as well as many major African languages.

Poster presentation at the XIII World AIDS Conference (Durban) and two accepted for presentation at the XIV World AIDS Conference (Barcelona).
