Other organizational history:
Founded in 1988, condomi opened the first condom only shop in Cologne/Germany. Only a few years later condomi operated a chain of franchise shops and developed its own brand "condomis". In 1997 a well established condom manufacturing plant (since 1929) located in Erfurt/Germany was incorporated. One year later condomi was listed at Frankfurt Stock Exchange as the first and only condom manufacturer. Since then condomi’s production increased in capacity and further improved in quality, operating one of the worlds most modern and fully automated condom manufacturing plants.
In 1997 condomi started cause-related marketing with a brand called ES² and ER². 5% of the sales from this product go to the Deutsche AIDS Hilfe e.V. in Germany and to the National AIDS Trust in the UK. Since 1998 condomi has actively been following developments on condom social marketing and has since then developed its own innovative approach to condom social marketing in developing countries. 2000 condomi acquired the majority of shares (75%) from Polands largest manufacturer. Today condomi is Europe's largest condom manufacturer with a total annual capacity of more than 900 million condoms.
Experience working with the private sector/ references:
References include cause related marketing projects, that were done in cooperation with European NGO’s such as Deutsche AIDS Hilfe e.V., the National AIDS Trust, and the Österreichische AIDSHilfe. condomi becoming i.e. the largest private, funder to the Deutsche AIDS Hilfe e.V..
condomi has also always been a close partner of several German health institutions and offices of the ministry of health in Germany, such as for the Bundeszentrale für gesundheitliche Aufklärung, who are responsible for informing and educating the German public about health threats, like HIV/AIDS.
condomi in co-operation with the local GTZ office in Kenya conducted a market study for condoms in urban and rural areas and pack designs in close co-operation with GTZ for the new GoK - Government of Kenya social marketing condoms.
The South African Topsy Foundation is being heavily supported and sponsored by condomi in their work to build a village for up to 2,000 orphans that are victims of HIV/AIDS. condomi helped to finance the Foundations operation for more than a year.
Since 2002 condomi is proud to be a member of the South African Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, as well as the Global Business Coalition.
In the same year condomi has signed a co-operation agreement with LoveLife, South Africa’s largest reproductive health NGO, to jointly realize condomi’s self-sustainable condom social marketing project. This project has been successfully in operation since October 2002.
Socio-cultural adaption is an integral part of our social marketing approach. condomi has therefore developed a series of training tools for certain cultural target groups within South Africa, i.e. Xhosa, Zulu, Sesotho and Afrikaans.
The slogan "be safe and have fun" is of key importance in the way condomi communicates its products. Destigmatization, done in a culturally sensitive manner, is important to us. All of our activities focus on these basic doctrines.
